In the center of Klosterneuburg, the traditional tree welcomes May – even though the communal celebration has to be canceled again this year. Mayor Mag. Stefan Schmuckenschlager dedicates a Maypole to the population during the crisis as a thank you for their solidarity and as a symbolic sign.
Events surrounding May 1st and the traditional Maypole setting must once again be cancelled. It was all the more important to Mayor Mag. Stefan Schmuckenschlager that the public does not have to miss this symbol of vitality and community.
Finding a suitable tree wasn't the biggest challenge. The city gardening office faced a problem: Where to get the colorful ribbons during lockdown? Textil Müller stepped in – junior manager Adnan Beslagic didn't hesitate and retrieved red and white satin ribbons from stock. Thanks to the donation, the Maypole 2021 can also be admired. It now waits, decorated and adorned, for its moment. The skilled gardeners even carved the city logo into the bark. The municipal works department will set up the Maypole in its usual spot on Friday using a crane truck.
„Especially in these difficult times, the Maypole is meant to convey hope,“ said the mayor. „I also want to thank the people of Klosterneuburg for their perseverance, discipline, and solidarity.“
The tree is 23 meters high and comes from the cadastral municipality of Weidlingbach.
