Visit to the Tomb of St. Leopold

Saint Leopold is not only the founder of the Klosterneuburg Monastery but has also been the patron saint of Lower Austria and Vienna since 1663. Emperor Leopold I, who proclaimed him the patron saint, linked this with the wish that the saint's feast day be celebrated with appropriate dignity and due diligence. Thus, the Klosterneuburg Monastery and the town jointly invite you to the Leopold celebrations and „Fasslrutschen“ (barrel sliding).
Visit to the tomb of St. Leopold with skull relic
The skull relic of Saint Leopold is the most important relic of the monastery. Once a year, it is displayed for veneration around the death day of the patron saint of the province. The skull bone is set in red velvet and bears a copy of the Austrian archducal hat. In addition to rich embroidery, various small jewels from devout venerators of the saint are sewn onto it. A particularly noteworthy piece of jewelry is the monkey mother and her young depicted on a pendant, likely a symbol of the patron saint's care for Austria.
