As the former residence of the Babenbergs and Habsburgs, and as Austria's oldest winery, Klosterneuburg Abbey is a particularly important repository of precious masterpieces and producer of fine wines. A variety of tours are available, showcasing magnificent rooms such as the treasury, the world-famous Verdun Altar, the old wine cellar, and much more. Along the historical path and in the Klosterneuburg City Museum, many historical cultural treasures of the Lower and Upper Town can also be discovered.

In addition to the ancient, mysterious books in the Abbey Library, the City Archive offers the opportunity to research forgotten family histories. Delightful culture enthusiasts can marvel at unique operas in the baroque open-air setting of the Kaiserhof on warm summer nights, accompanied by a glass of wine.

Klosterneuburg to Listen To

The city marketing department is creating a HistOHRienpfad (a pun combining "history" and "history path" with "ear") using audio guides from the historical trail. Klosterneuburg's city history is humorously narrated in German by comedian Werner Brix and in English by Stuart Freeman, a famous voice from radio and television.

On two different routes – the Upper Town and the Lower Town, with a total of 37 stops, you can learn all sorts of interesting facts about house signs, old crafts, the origin of street names, special historical events right at the location where they happened, and much more, experiencing Klosterneuburg in a completely new and lively way.

The audio guides can be listened to on any standard mobile phone, tablet, or computer using the free app „Hearonymus.“ Everyone, whether on-site or at home, can now hear the city's story.

The English-language Histo(h)rienpfad is also a good tip for students and English learners who want to improve, refresh, or keep their skills from fading, spiced up with local color and history!
