Art Between Consumption and Spirituality

The need for material goods accompanies the need for spirituality and tends to overshadow it. The exhibition God and Money moves within the tension between the spiritual and material spheres and displays works from five centuries. The dance around the Golden Calf becomes a dance around the gold coin.

In the Middle Ages, only the noblest materials were suitable to show us mortals a tiny spark of the heavenly kingdom. And although people later became convinced that God himself resides in the smallest things, the religious quality of money—having and being—remains a constantly relevant question for theology, philosophy, and also art: it is impossible to serve God and worship money.
