Artistic Positions on Charity

Fitting the motto of the St. Leopold Peace Prize, »One shall bear another's burden,« the exhibition deals with the broad spectrum of Christian charity, made tangible through the »Seven Works of Mercy« mentioned in Matthew 25: »Feed the hungry« – »Give drink to the thirsty« – »Clothe the naked« – »Shelter the stranger« – »Visit the sick« – »Visit the imprisoned« – »Bury the dead.«.

If one attempts to apply this to today's world, the topic's great relevance becomes apparent: one spontaneously associates terms such as development aid, nursing, homeless welfare, refugee support, the issue of beggars, modern penal systems, but also the palliative care movement, funeral services, etc. As with the successful predecessor project »What Hurts,« the aim is to place these themes within a timeless context through artworks from the Gothic period to the present day.
