„Roger Ballen. Drawing Meets Photography“

Native New Yorker Roger Ballen (b. 1950), who has been living and working in South Africa for several decades, is one of the most influential and significant photographic artists of the 21st century. Roger Ballen, who describes himself as an „outsider,“ explains: „I integrated drawing and photography into painting to create a mixed-media image. My goal was to break down the boundaries between photography and other arts and to free photography from its self-isolation as a medium.“
Starting September 25, 2025, Museum Gugging will present the exhibition „roger ballen.! drawing meets photography“. Curated by Nina Ansperger, this exhibition focuses on drawing. Drawing is central to the „ballenesque“ aesthetic. Over the past few decades, Roger Ballen's oeuvre has evolved from narrative photography to a body of work increasingly dominated by drawing, also embracing Jean Dubuffet's Art Brut concept.
